Equipment

  • Large jar or pitcher (1-quart)
  • Measuring spoon
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth for straining out the berries

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh cranberries or frozen, thawed first so they crush cleanly
  • 4 cups cold water filtered gives the cleanest flavor, but tap works if it tastes fine on its own
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced brightens the drink and balances tartness without needing sugar

Optional Garnish

  • 1 sprig fresh mint garnish; can also be steeped in the last hour for extra flavor
  • whole cranberries garnish

Instructions

Prep the Cranberries

  • Rinse 1 cup fresh cranberries under cold water and pat dry.
  • Lightly crush the cranberries with the back of a spoon or a muddler, just enough to split the skins.
  • Add the crushed cranberries to a large jar or pitcher.

Steep and Strain

  • Pour in 4 cups of cold water.
  • Cover and refrigerate for exactly 4 hours.
  • Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean pitcher, pressing gently on the berries to release the last of the liquid.
  • Stir in the juice of half a lemon.
  • Serve over ice, garnished with a mint sprig and a few whole cranberries if you like.

Notes

Frozen cranberries work fine when fresh ones are out of season, thaw them first so they crush cleanly instead of shattering.
This holds well in the fridge for about 3 days, so doubling the batch is worth it if you're drinking it regularly.
If you're managing chronic kidney disease or on dialysis, confirm your specific potassium and fluid limits with your doctor before adding this or any new drink to your routine.
